%#&@ That Hurt nate: great way to start off the album! i love the thick bass line. i think i came up with the verse in this one and you had the chorus, but then I changed the ending chords or something and suggested you use that pipe organ patch for the chords. I know the bridge idea was all yours though.
Drew: This is a great opening song, because it starts off as a classic jazz feel. I'm so glad you thought of using the pipe organ for my part. It's such a nice touch and a great change from the typical percussion or
gan that could have been used instead. A great song to get the album spinning.
Dream Surfing nate: i think you started the concept for this one off with those bells, then i came up with the complimenting chords to go along with it. i think this was pretty much a straight improvisation.
Drew: Yeah, I remember making this one. I found those bells on the X5D and played that one motive right away, and you thought it sounded cool. We built off of that and it turned into one hell of a ride. We didn't spend much time composing this one.
Speaking Metaphorically nate: right when we finished recording this one I couldn't believe we went nine and a half minutes. it still doesn't seem like it to me. the verse and chorus were written by me and you pretty much just went crazy on the organ for the whole song. :)
Drew: Wow...I still can't believe this song is over 9 minutes long. Every time I listen to it, it sure doesn't sound like it's that long. I had fun with this song, not only because it has a great chord progression, but you let me break loose and go wild on the organ. I appreciated that. ;)
Sequence for the Unseen nate: i like how this one is kind of soft, yet it still has a great beat and very interesting changes. you did the melodic rhodes parts and i think i came up with the chords for that, and then you made that bassline for the chorus and i put some chords up against that.
Drew: I agree with you. It's a nice soft song that fits in great in the spot that it is put in the album. It's a great "break" from the style of the first 3 songs, and the chords and changes you came up with worked great.
Crash the Cathedral nate: This song is great. i know you did the verse chords for this one in that eerie choir sound, then i actually made some chords to compliment yours, and they go together so well that it's almost, well, eerie. the chorus was a combination of both of us. i think you did the bass and i did the chords. i remember this was one of the only ones we managed to record on the very first take.
Drew: This is one of my favorite songs on the CD. I LOVE how I used the choir sound for the high chords, and the bass/drum patch that we used on the Triton is a perfect compliment. It does have an eerie feel to it, but at the same time, it makes me smile everytime I listen to it. I love this song.
Movement on the... WTF?! nate: when we were sitting on your couch naming the songs and this one came on, it was hilarious because we pretty much looked at each other and said "What the ffff----?" and it stuck.
Drew: Seriously....what the f*ck is this?!
Stop Codon nate: this one deviates a bit from the acid jazz feel of the album, but in a definite good way. you did the bass lines for all the parts in this one then i added the chords and the melody line that gets played throughout the song.
Drew: I love the more electronic "techno" feel this song has, and the chord progressions we came up with are great. I also love the melodic motive you came up with for the chorus parts, and your solo is awesome.
Hometown: Outer Space nate: i think this is my favorite. it's so completely out there that you can't help but love it. you played those minor notes in the top and did the bass line, and i did the saw wave and rhodes. pretty much everything we play on this one is in a different key, but it fits together perfectly. did we do this one in one take?
Drew: This is my other favorite song on the CD. First off, I love how the beat starts out strong right away, and immediately gets your foot tapping. Secondly, I'm amazed by the fact that my bells part are in a completely different key from the chords and bass line, yet they all seem to fit together. This is a song that would drive someone insane if they were trying to improvise along with it. An awesome song!
Just Like Old Times nate: kind of a softer song, but it's got a great feel. i came up with the verse chords and you made that great bass line to go with it, which is actually in 12-bar blues. i think i did the chorus. yeah, because i think i was working on that for like 30 minutes and you had fallen asleep or was suffocating your cat or something.
Drew: Yeah, this song is cool. Laid back, bluesy, and has a great feel to it. I do, however, remember getting bored off of my ass waiting for you to figure out your chords part. I think I did fall asleep, actually. Either that, or I graduated...one of the two.
Next Time on “The DNA Project” nate: once again, a great closing track, and the thirtieth song we've written together. very nice piano solo in the beginning, SHOW OFF!! ;) this song was interesting, because i think i actually directed this song while we were recording it. i kept changing the chord structure in our takes before that so finally you just told me to tell you what notes to play while we were recording and it worked out great.
Drew: I also love this song, because it has a great closing sound to it. And I also got to show off my skills. ;) I do remember, however, that you basically directed the entire song as we recorded it. You basically just called out, "A-flat....C....F....B-flat..." and I followed along. Either way, it worked, and I'm proud of how this song turned out. A great end cap for our 3rd album!
